How I escaped the depths of depression & dysfunction.

My name is Kpakpo Acquaye. I’m a qualified doctor with over a decade of experience in trauma, emergency, primary care & functional medicine.

But my time in conventional healthcare has convinced me that most of the time we’re barely fixing anything.

After years of looking into alternative health, psychology, Eastern medicine, nutrition, exercise & sleep physiology, I came to the conclusion that there are many things that we can fix without pharmacology.

So I started to focus on health coaching, with a particular interest in health optimisation. Because my focus is to help clients achieve optimal health and well-being.

When I was younger, I always wanted to be a doctor. I loved music; I loved sport, but everything was in service of getting into medical school.

I imagined learning everything there was to learn & using it to heal & help people. I could feel the difference I was going to be able to make in the world…

But by the time I reached the second year, it was abundantly clear - my only options were to cut things out or give drugs.

Now that’s fine, as long as you’re actually fixing something.

But all too often people were taking drugs to put a Band-Aid over potentially life-threatening problems, without the root cause being remedied.

So I graduated, and soon the grind of UK hospital work was upon me.

2 hour commutes, on-call rooms, long hours, early mornings, lack of sleep, lunches on your rounds, mediocre pay and job pressure take their toll.

All around were stressed, overworked nurses & doctors who were overweight with sallow skin, eating easily accessible junk provided by the hospital caterers.

I was determined not to let this happen to me.

The bombshell...

By the time I was in my mid-20s, I was in a good place and felt in decent health.

But then I received a diagnosis that changed my life.

My father was dying of cancer. They gave him months to live.

My whole world was turned upside down.

I’d never thought of my father as unhealthy. Slightly overweight perhaps, but not in danger of premature death. He was only in his early 50s.

Once the shock wore off, it became apparent how fragile life is & how much of our health we take for granted.

I battled grinding anxiety all day, every day.

Depression was a familiar friend, and no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t shake it.

Finding a way to save my father from a terminal diagnosis while working & passing board exams in constant competition was wearing me down.

I started to take refuge in more alcohol to “unwind” quickly.

Going out to drown my sorrows.

Eating tasty snacks & cakes because I “deserved” it. Because I needed something to help me feel better.

But I didn’t feel better.

I was tired, lethargic, anxious, unfocussed.

One day I looked in the mirror and didn’t recognise myself.

It was then that I realised - I’d turned into exactly what I swore to avoid.

I took advantage of my situation and got myself checked over.

I wasn’t surprised by what I heard, but I wasn’t happy about it.

I had the physiology, hormones and metabolism of a man 30 years older.

I thought back to how I ended up here. What happened to the teenager who realised that this system doesn’t work?

I resolved that medication & other band aids would not be the solution.

It was time to go back to first principles to fix this.

You can do it naturally.

You just have know how.
